As im lazy asf have a reddit user’s summary In a nutshell? Imagine the worst, most grimdark, future setting you can. Then make it worse. Everyone hates everyone else, war is a constant grinding thing, the universe is going to hell in a handbasket, everyone has to fight a bitter war of all vs all just to survive for a day, and the whole thing is probably pointless as within the next few decades everything in the galaxy will be eaten by bugs from the Andromeda galaxy.
Here’s the slightly less nutshell version:
Gods are real, and evil. There are no good gods. Cthulu looks like a pansy compared to the gods of Warhammer 40K.
Hyperspace is where the gods live. Star travel basically involves traveling through hell.
Humanity is under the control of a theocracy worshiping a semi-dead Emperor, the theocracy hates the gods, hates all non-humans, and isn’t that fond of some types of humans. Science and invention are outlawed, technology is maintained by rituals no one actually understands the meaning of. Asking questions gets you killed by the Church. Thinking gets you killed by the Church. Getting drafted gets you killed by the aliens, cultists who worship the evil gods, or Heritics the Church orders you to hunt down and kill.
Oh, and the Church is right. Thinking, innovation, freedom, etc open you up to the evil gods and turn you into a cultist. The only way to stay sane and avoid having your brain eaten by demons is to mindlessly worship the (dead) Emperor.
Orks are fungus beings who reproduce asexually via spores, if you see one ork there will be thousands next year. Kill an Ork and on death it releases billions of spores. One Ork means a planet is going to be swarming with Orks forever. And they really, really, like fighting and killing. Doesn’t matter who, they’ll fight other Orks, they’ll fight humans, Eldar, Chaos, whatever. They are the only beings in the universe who are having a good time
Chaos is the people who decided to worship the real, evil, gods and practice icky human sacrifice, dark rituals, etc to get magic. They can force you to join them, but mostly they’ll just kill you in amusing ways in hopes of gaining favor with the demons and gods.
The Eldar are murderous elves who hate everyone non-elvish and are split into the Dark Eldar (who will rape and torture you to death), and the normal Eldar who will just kill you because they can’t be bothered dealing with non-elves. If you’re lucky the two factions will ignore you and fight each other.
The Tyranid are like the Zerg from Starcraft turned up to 11 (though, since the Tyranid came first you could say the Zerg are a wimpified version of the Tyrinid), and will probably eat the whole galaxy any day now. And they’re apparently running from something even worse.
The Tau are a multi-racial science driven federation of people united to serve the Greater Good, sounds nice right? They’re also run by a secretive aristocracy with a hidden agenda, use mind control to keep their population in order, have a rigid caste system, are expansionist as all get out, and usually define “the Greater Good” as whatever the ruling elites want.
