Vera has an actual arc of overcoming (slowly) her internalized homophobia and it’s so expertly written and illustrated.
Derik went from a cheating asshole in the beginning of the story to a kind of just… tragic gay man? like, he still cheated on his wife, but the way we are told his side of the story makes us understand him. He is still a piece of shit for cheating on Vera, but so is she (to a lesser degree) for doing the same. Both of them are complex individuals, and I love it.

Yeah I can confidently say that Derik, as shitty as he absolutely was for all the cheating, is a good person. still morally grey, but hey, at least he ain’t homophobic and is a good dad, so that’s something! 😀
